West Main Street runs from the left center edge to the right bottom corner while Drake Road runs from the bottom center edge to the right center edge. Interstate 131 can be seen running from left to right along the top of the image. The farm near the top right corner is the Drake Farm, of whom Drake Road is named after. The buildings under construction include the Turnstyle Discount Store at 5300 West Main Street (building farthest to the left) and Maple Hill Mall, 5030 West Main Street (building complex in the foreground). When the mall opens later in the year it will house the following businesses: Montgomery Ward and Company, Walden Bookstore and Hallmark Card Shop, The Plum Tree Gift Shop, Hickory Farms, Royal Chef Cafeteria, Spencer Gifts, Flag Brothers, Mans Image Barber Shop, So-Fro Fabrics, Kiddy Korner, Industrial State Bank, Singer Company, Jean Nicole's Clothing, Mrs. Stover's Candies, Children's Photographer, Kinney Shoes, Father and Son Shoes, Things Remembered Gift Shop, Bakers Shoes, Shaw's Jewelry, Stekee's Department Store, Konee's, Nu Vision Optical, Orange Bowl, Bernard Wig Salon, Louie's News Agency, Norman Merle Cosmetics, American Handicrafts, Recordland, Baskin Robins Ice Cream, Motherhood Maternity Shop, Fritters, Natural Health Foods, Hot Sam Snack Bar, Shoeland Inc. By 2006 this area has been completely developed. The mall complex has been converted into a outdoor shopping plaza housing only several large retail chains verses the fifty-three small stores it originally started with. The only thing unchanged is the Drake Farm which is currently owned by the Oshtemo Historical Society and is undergoing restoration. |
