. The
location
of this
picnic
site
is
believed
to be that of
Ramona
Park
located
in the then
Township
of
Portage
on the
west
side
of
Long
Lake
but this has
yet
to be
confirmed
.
Bowers
Tool
and
Die
Company
,
located
at
610-614
West
Willard
in
Kalamazoo
,
Michigan
, was
well
known
for the
manufacture
of
cigarette
lighters
.
When
World
War
II
began
the
company
was
forced
to
close
due
to its
manufacturing
material
being
deemed
"
essential
war
material.
"
Fortunately
the
company
was
able
to
obtain
a
government
contract
to
produce
its
lighters
for the
military
and for a
while
Bowers
lighters
were as
well
known
and
popular
as the
Zippo
. As of
2017
Ramona
Park
still
exists
although
all
of the
earlier
structures
have been
replaced
or
removed
. The
Bower
Tool
and
Die
Company
is
no
longer
in
operation
however
the
original
factory
building
has been
restored
and
re-purposed
.
