downtown
Kalamazoo
in
commemoration

Salute
to
Our
Heroes
"
month
.
Nine
of the
images
in this
series
were
taken
of the
parade
from the
second
floor
of a
building
on the
northeast
corner
of
West
Michigan
Avenue
(parade
route)
and
South
Rose
Street
(cross
street)
. The
images
feature
a
variety
of
patriotic
and
military
organizations
such
as:
Wayne
County
Auxiliary
No
.
1
of
Detroit
;
American
Legion
Post
#29
;
40
and
8
Float
;
World
War
I
Veterans
and a
convoy
of "
current
"
military
vehicles
(of
which
appear
to be
driven
by
African
Americans)
. The
parade
route
,
which
runs
east
along
Michigan
Avenue
, has
thousands
of
spectators
lining
the
route
.
Across
the
street
is
the
Kalamazoo
County
Court
House
(opened
in
1937)
and the
First
Baptist
Church
. As of
2018
this
view
has
changed
very
little
. The
building
where
this
image
was
taken
has been
demolished
and
replaced
with a
convention
complex
. A
news
article
printed
in the
Kalamazoo
Gazette
on
September
7th
,
1942
states
: "
Kalamazoo's
part
in the
nationwide
billion
dollar
war
bond
drive
, "
Salute
to
Our
Heroes
"
month
,
neared
an
early
campaign
climax
Saturday
night
with the
completino
of
plans
for the
visit
here
Tuesday
(September
8th)
of
James
Cagney
, the
Hollywood
movie
star
.
Committees
working
closely
with the
Kalamazoo
County
war
bond
committee
headed
by
J
.
H
.
Tolhuizen
Saturday
reported
everything
ready
for the
big
day
Tuesday
the
day
when
Cagney
will
visit
the
Kalamazoo
Stove
Company
and the
Fuller
Manufacturing
Company
war
production
plants
in the
morning
,
attend
a
public
reception
and
rally
at the
county
building
at
noon
, and be the
guest
at a
war
bond
luncheon
in the
Masonic
temple
at
12:30
.
Cagney's
brief
visit
has been
arranged
through
the
co-operation
of the
motion
picture
industry
,
sponsoring
"
Salute
to
Our
Heroes
"
month
, and the
industry's
war
activities
committee
for
Michigan...Film
Star
Cagney
will
arrive
here
Tuesday
morning
from
Mason
where
he
is
to
make
a
Labor
Day
appearance
at a
CIO-AFL
labor
rally
. At
10:30
Tuesday
he will
address
Kalamazoo
Stove
and
Furnace
Company
employees
inside
the
plant
, and at
11
will
speak
to a
gathering
at the
Fuller
Manufacturing
Company
parking
lot
.
Employees
of the
Allen
Electric
Company
,
Checker
Cab
Manufacturing
Corporation
and
Sutherland
Paper
Company
who
are not
working
at the
time
will be
invited
to
joint
in the
rally
. The
actor
will be
introduced
by
Frank

. At

formed
on
Water
Street
at the
