building
housing
the
J
.
C
.
Penny
was
constructed
in
1867
.
Known
as
Corporation
Hall
is
first
served
as
Kalamazoo's
Village
Office's
and then as
Kalamazoo's
first
City
Hall
.
It
was also
home
to the
fire
department
. The
city
would
eventually
move
out
of the
structure
which
they then
leased
to
J
.
C
.
Penny
in the
mid
1920's
. At the
time
of the
lease
,
J
.
C
.
Penny
altered
the
original
Italianate
Structure
giving
it
a
more
commercial
look
.
Over
the
next
several
decades
the
building
saw
numerous
tenants
until
being
demolished
and
replaced
in
2011
. The
demolition
was not
due
to
unsympathetic
owners
but was
due
to
sever
structural
issues
. In this
image
both
the
J
.
C
.
Penny
building
and the
two
story
building
to the
left
have been
demolished
and
replaced
. The
building
to the
right
remains
intact
.
It
should also be
noted
that not
long
after
this
image
was
taken
Burdick
Street
was
converted
into the
nation's
first
pedestrian
mall
. This
mall
would
last
for a
few
decades
before
being
reopened
to
traffic
.
Today
,
2018
, the
street
features
a
one
way
,
one
lane
traffic
flow
to the
south
with
random
parking
spots
.
