Michigan
Historical
Marker
Dedication
Subject
Parks
Presidents
Mayors
Description
Dedication
of
Michigan
Historical
Marker
number
44
commemorating
Abraham
Lincoln's
visit
to the
city
of
Kalamazoo
(then
a
village)
and his
subsequent
speech
in
Bronson
Park
. The
marker
,
which
was
dedicated
on
January
18th
,
1957
,
stands
on the
south
side
of the
Park
. The
park
itself
is
located
in
downtown
Kalamazoo
and
is
bordered
by
South
Park
Street
on the
west
,
Academy
Street
on the
north
,
South
Rose
Street
on the
east
and
West
South
Street
on the
south
.
Currently
the
only
individual
identified
in the
image
is
Mayor
Glen
Allen
(1951
to
1959)
who
can
be
seen
standing
third
from the
left
and
who
is
holding
the
cord
which
unveiled
the
marker
. The
text
of the
marker
reads
: "On
August
27
,
1856
, here in this
park
,
Abraham
Lincoln
, then an
obscure
lawyer
spoke
to a
rally
for
John
Fremont
, the
Republican
presidential
nominee
. This was the
only
time
that
Lincoln
addressed
an
audience
in
Michigan
. The
event
was
almost
unnoticed
in the
press
.
Some
republicans
felt
the
speaker
was
too
conservative
on the
antislavery
issue
.
Four
years
later
Michigan's
vote
helped
put
Lincoln
into the
White
House.
